Frogs chirp and insects buzz... birds flitter among cattails as a hawk soars overhead... bright pink and yellow lilies float atop the water, which ripples with a gentle breeze... These sights and sounds are but a taste of life at Pine Hole Bog, a natural oasis in southern Ulster County, New York. This unique environment teems with diverse and rare wildlife and vegetation. For generations, residents have long enjoyed its beauty, berries and fish, and peace and quiet. And today, Pine Hole provides critical services to surrounding towns by helping to filter water, guard against flooding, and prevent soil erosion. As nearby towns expand and land is developed, local communities have the unique opportunity to maintain their quality of life even as the region grows and changes. Part of this effort involves protecting Pine Hole Bog. There are many reasons---scenic, ecological, and cultural---to do so, for the good of the everyone and for generations to come. |
